A little history

Richmond Castle — begun in 1071 by Alan Rufus — is one of the finest Norman fortresses in England, its great tower almost intact. The Theatre Royal (1788) is one of the most complete Georgian theatres in Britain, operating continuously. The market place, with its medieval cross and surrounding buildings, is one of the finest in the country.

Richmond Castle is outstanding — the tower gives extraordinary views over the Swale gorge. The Georgian Theatre Royal for period productions. The market place is magnificent. The Swale gorge walk below the castle.
