About The Rhondda

Known for

The Welsh choral tradition (the Rhondda male voice choirs are world-famous), the Rhondda Heritage Park, and the most celebrated of the South Wales coal mining valleys

A little history

The Rhondda Valley was the most intensively mined of the South Wales coalfield valleys — at its peak producing a quarter of the world's coal. The Rhondda Heritage Park at Lewis Merthyr Colliery tells the story brilliantly. The male voice choir tradition grew from the chapels of the valley communities.

Local tip

The Rhondda Heritage Park is genuinely excellent — the underground mine experience is extraordinary. The male voice choir performances when available. The valley hillsides walking. The Pontypridd gateway town.
