About Redruth

Known for

The Cornish Mining World Heritage Site (the engine houses and industrial landscape around Redruth are UNESCO World Heritage), William Murdoch's connection (the inventor of gas lighting was born here), and a Cornwall mining town of global industrial significance

A little history

The landscape around Redruth — tin and copper mines, engine houses, viaducts and industrial buildings — forms part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. William Murdoch, the Scottish inventor who created gas lighting in 1792, worked for Boulton & Watt here. Redruth was at the epicentre of the Industrial Revolution's mining age.

Local tip

The Heartlands World Heritage Site visitor centre tells the extraordinary mining story. The engine houses at Poldark Mine and Wheal Coates are dramatic. The town centre for local Cornish character.
