About Putney

Known for

The Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race start (from Putney Bridge to Mortlake), Putney Heath (the site of several duels, including the one that killed William Pitt the Younger's opponent), All Saints Putney (where the Putney Debates took place in 1647), and one of London's most pleasant riverside neighbourhoods

A little history

The Putney Debates of 1647 — held in All Saints Putney — were extraordinary: the army, led by Cromwell and Ireton, debated the radical Agreement of the People with the Levellers, arguing for universal suffrage 250 years before it happened. The Boat Race has started at Putney since 1845.

Local tip

The Boat Race in March from Putney Bridge is extraordinary. All Saints Church for the Putney Debates heritage. The Thames towpath walk. Putney High Street for excellent independent food.
