About Porthmadog

Known for

The Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railways (the finest narrow-gauge railways in Britain), Portmeirion (the extraordinary Italianate village created by Clough Williams-Ellis), the Glaslyn Estuary, and a North Wales port town of great railway and architectural heritage

A little history

The Festiniog Railway — the world's first narrow-gauge passenger railway, opened in 1836 — runs from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog through stunning scenery. The Welsh Highland Railway connects to Caernarfon. Portmeirion — the extraordinary Italianate village created by Clough Williams-Ellis from 1926 — is 2 miles from the town.

Local tip

Portmeirion is genuinely extraordinary — one of the great architectural follies of the 20th century. The Festiniog Railway is superb. The Glaslyn Estuary RSPB reserve for ospreys.
