A little history

Poole Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world — only Sydney is larger. Sandbanks peninsula has become notorious for extraordinarily expensive property. Brownsea Island, in the harbour mouth, is where Robert Baden-Powell held the first Scout camp in 1907. The town was a major medieval and Victorian port.

Local tip

Brownsea Island (NT) is excellent — the Scout camp heritage, the red squirrels and the sea views. Sandbanks beach for the extraordinary property and the beach. Poole Quay for the harbour atmosphere. The Poole Museum is free.
