A little history

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway — running from Pickering to Whitby through the national park — carries over 300,000 passengers a year and is the most popular heritage railway in Britain. Pickering Castle, built by William the Conqueror and later used as a hunting lodge by medieval kings, dominates the town. Beck Isle Museum is exceptionally good.

Local tip

The NYMR steam train to Whitby is genuinely magical — one of England's great railway journeys. Beck Isle Museum is outstanding and inexpensive. Pickering Castle is free with English Heritage. The market for local Yorkshire produce.
