About Perth

Known for

The Stone of Destiny (Perth was where Scottish kings were crowned at Scone), the Fair City (of Walter Scott's novel), the Tay, the art galleries, and Scotland's former capital

A little history

Perth was the capital of Scotland until 1452 and the place where Scottish kings were crowned at Scone — the Stone of Destiny on which they sat is now in Perth Museum. Walter Scott called Perth 'The Fair City'. The city has excellent cultural institutions including the Perth Museum (which displays the Stone of Destiny) and the beautiful North Inch.

Local tip

Perth Museum for the Stone of Destiny — genuinely extraordinary. The North Inch riverside walk. Scone Palace for the coronation site. The excellent independent shops and food on the High Street.
