The Lake District gateway (Eden Valley leading to Ullswater), Penrith Castle, the Beacon (hilltop landmark), the excellent market, and a Cumbrian market town of great character at the edge of the Lakes

Penrith was a significant market town and staging post on the main route north. The castle, built in the 14th century, was the childhood home of Richard III. The Beacon on the hill above the town was part of a system of beacons used to warn of Scottish raids. The Eden Valley gives access to Ullswater and the Lakes.
