About Padiham

Known for

The Gawthorpe Hall (a magnificent Elizabethan mansion, National Trust), the Padiham Mechanics Institute, and a Lancashire weaving town with remarkable architectural heritage

A little history

Gawthorpe Hall, built between 1600 and 1605 for the Shuttleworth family and later modified by Charles Barry, is one of the finest Elizabethan mansions in Lancashire. It houses an extraordinary textile collection. The town grew as a cotton weaving centre in the 19th century.

Local tip

Gawthorpe Hall (NTS) is excellent — the textile collection and the architecture are outstanding. The town centre for local Lancashire character. Burnley is close for wider amenities.
