A little history

Thomas Chippendale — whose 1754 'Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director' transformed furniture design worldwide — was born in Otley in 1718. The Chevin — a dramatic gritstone escarpment giving panoramic Wharfedale views — overlooks the town. The River Wharfe and the agricultural hinterland give the town a strong sense of place.

Local tip

The Chevin walk is outstanding — the views from the top are extraordinary. The Market Place for excellent independent shops and cafes. The Wharfe riverside walk. The Chippendale birthplace plaque.
