About Oban

Known for

The Gateway to the Isles (ferries to Mull, Iona, Islay, Colonsay, Coll and Tiree), McCaig's Tower (the colosseum-like folly above the town), fresh seafood (some of the finest in Scotland), and the unofficial capital of the Highlands and Islands

A little history

Oban has been the main port for the Hebrides since the introduction of ferry services in the 19th century. McCaig's Tower — a Victorian folly built by local banker John Stuart McCaig to provide employment and commemorate his family — dominates the skyline. The town has some of Scotland's finest seafood, direct from the boats.

Local tip

The fresh seafood from the Oban Fish and Chip Shop on the pier is genuinely outstanding — eaten overlooking the harbour. McCaig's Tower at sunset for extraordinary bay views. Take a day trip to Mull and Iona. The Scotch whisky of the local Oban Distillery.
