A little history

Oakham is the county town of Rutland — England's smallest county, which fought successfully to avoid absorption into Leicestershire. Oakham Castle Great Hall contains an extraordinary collection of horseshoes donated by visiting monarchs and peers since the 14th century. Rutland Water is England's largest man-made lake by surface area.

Local tip

The horseshoe collection at Oakham Castle is extraordinary — royal horseshoes going back to Edward IV. Rutland Water for sailing, cycling and the osprey viewpoint. The market for local Rutland produce. Uppingham town is beautiful nearby.
