About Norwood

Known for

Crystal Palace transmitter (the tallest structure in London), the South Norwood Arts Quarter, Norwood Grove, and a South London neighbourhood of surprising arts vitality

A little history

Upper Norwood and Crystal Palace were transformed when the Crystal Palace was moved here from Hyde Park in 1854 — the area became a Victorian pleasure ground and cultural destination. The Palace burned down in 1936. The TV transmitter mast now marks the site. South Norwood has developed a vibrant independent arts quarter.

Local tip

Crystal Palace Park for the Victorian dinosaur sculptures — extraordinary 19th century reconstructions. The South Norwood Arts Quarter for independent galleries and food. Norwood Grove for the Victorian parkland.
