About Newquay

Known for

Fistral Beach (Britain's surf capital), the Blue Lagoon water park, the Headland Hotel (a magnificent Victorian clifftop hotel), and Britain's most popular surf destination

A little history

Newquay was a quiet pilchard fishing village until the railway arrived in 1876 and tourism transformed it. Fistral Beach became famous for surfing in the 1960s and now hosts the British and European Surf Championships. The town is Britain's undisputed surf capital — with more surf schools than anywhere in the country.

Local tip

Fistral Beach for surfing or watching — the waves are extraordinary. The Headland Hotel for the Victorian clifftop experience. Towan Beach for the island rock. The town centre for surf shops and food.
