Known for

The headquarters of British horseracing (the National Horseracing Museum, the Jockey Club, Tattersalls, and two racecourses), Newmarket Heath, and a Suffolk town where everything revolves around the horse

A little history

Newmarket has been the home of British horseracing since Charles II moved his court here in the 1660s. The Jockey Club — the governing body of racing — has been based here since 1752. The National Horseracing Museum is outstanding. Tattersalls, the world's most famous bloodstock auction house, holds its sales here.

Local tip

The National Horseracing Museum is genuinely excellent. The gallops on Newmarket Heath at dawn — thousands of racehorses being worked simultaneously. Tattersalls sales for the world's most expensive horses changing hands.
