A little history

Newcastle sits where the Mournes dramatically meet the Irish Sea. The Slieve Donard Hotel — a Victorian railway hotel — overlooks the town. Percy French's song 'Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea' was inspired by this exact view. Tollymore Forest Park, with its extraordinary trees, is at the foot of the mountains.

Local tip

The Slieve Donard walk from the town gives the best Mournes experience. Tollymore Forest Park is beautiful — Game of Thrones filmed here. The strand for the Mournes backdrop. Percy French's song was written about this view.
