About Newark-on-Trent

Known for

Newark Castle (where King John died in 1216), the Civil War sieges (Newark was the last Royalist town to surrender), the market place (one of England's finest), and a Nottinghamshire market town of extraordinary historical depth

A little history

King John died at Newark Castle in October 1216. Newark was the last Royalist town to surrender in the Civil War — three sieges were fought here between 1643 and 1646. The market place, with its surviving medieval and Georgian buildings, is one of England's finest. The Gilstrap Centre museum tells the story brilliantly.

Local tip

The castle ruins are free and excellent — the riverside setting is beautiful. The market place for local Nottinghamshire produce. The Gilstrap Centre for the Civil War story. The antique shops are excellent.
