Neath has one of the longest histories of any Welsh town — the Roman fort of Nidum (Neath) was established around 75 AD. Neath Abbey, founded in 1130, is one of the finest ruined abbeys in Wales. The Neath Canal, now a heritage trail, was a vital industrial waterway.
