About Nantwich

Known for

The Nantwich Food Festival (one of England's finest), the medieval town centre (rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1583), the Battle of Nantwich 1644, the cheese heritage, and a Cheshire market town of exceptional beauty

A little history

Nantwich's Great Fire of 1583 burned most of the town — Queen Elizabeth I contributed to the rebuilding, which created the magnificent black-and-white timber-framed buildings that survive today. The Battle of Nantwich (1644) was a Parliamentary victory that saved the town from Royalist siege. The town was once the centre of Cheshire's salt and cheese trade.

Local tip

The medieval town centre is beautiful — the black-and-white buildings on Hospital Street are outstanding. The Nantwich Food Festival in September is one of England's best. The church of St Mary for the medieval interior.
