A little history

James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose — who fought brilliantly for Charles I before his execution in 1650 — was born in Montrose. The Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve is one of the most important sites for pink-footed geese in Scotland. The town has one of the widest High Streets in Scotland.

Local tip

Montrose Basin for the extraordinary pink-footed geese (autumn) and ospreys (summer). The High Street is impressively wide. The Montrose Museum for the Marquess's story. The beach is excellent and rarely crowded.
