About Midhurst

Known for

Cowdray Park (the magnificent Tudor ruin and polo ground), the South Downs National Park, H.G. Wells's connections, and a small West Sussex market town of exceptional beauty

A little history

Cowdray House — burnt out in 1793 — is one of England's finest Tudor ruins, set in 10,000 acres of parkland that includes one of the world's most prestigious polo grounds. H.G. Wells taught at Midhurst Grammar School and later attended it. The South Downs surround the town.

Local tip

Cowdray Ruins are extraordinary and free. Cowdray Polo for the glamorous sporting spectacle (open to spectators). The South Downs walking from the town. The town centre for excellent independent shops.
