About Middlesbrough

Known for

The Transporter Bridge (the world's largest working transporter bridge), the Riverside Stadium (Middlesbrough FC), the Dorman Museum, and a Teesside town that built much of the world's industrial infrastructure

A little history

Middlesbrough grew with extraordinary speed — in 1801 it had 25 inhabitants; by 1900 over 90,000. The iron and steel works forged girders for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Tyne Bridge and structures worldwide. The Transporter Bridge (1911) is the world's largest working transporter bridge. Captain James Cook grew up in nearby Marton.

Local tip

The Transporter Bridge is genuinely extraordinary — take the gondola across. The Dorman Museum is free and excellent. The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Stewart Park. The Riverside Stadium for Middlesbrough FC.
