About Melrose

Known for

Melrose Abbey (where Robert the Bruce's heart is buried), the Borders Rugby Sevens (the original Rugby Sevens tournament), the Eildon Hills, and a small Borders town of profound historical and sporting significance

A little history

Melrose Abbey, founded in 1136, is the finest ruined abbey in Scotland — Robert the Bruce's heart is said to be buried here (a lead casket was found in 1921). The Melrose Sevens, first played in 1883, is the world's original Rugby Sevens tournament. The Eildon Hills — three volcanic peaks — give extraordinary Border views.

Local tip

The Abbey is magnificent — one of Scotland's great ruins. The Eildon Hills for the summit views and Roman camp. The Borders walking is outstanding. Priorwood Garden (NTS) for the dried flower collection.
