A little history

Matlock grew as a Victorian spa town along the dramatic Derwent Gorge. The Heights of Abraham — reached by cable car — have been a tourist attraction since Victorian times. Riber Castle, built by John Smedley (the hydropathy pioneer), dominates the skyline. The town sits at the gateway to the Derbyshire Dales.

Local tip

The Heights of Abraham cable car and caverns are genuinely excellent. Riber Castle ruins for the dramatic views. The Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO heritage trail begins nearby.
