A little history

J.M.W. Turner loved Margate — the quality of the light over the Thames Estuary inspired his late work. The Turner Contemporary gallery, opened in 2011, began the town's extraordinary arts-led renaissance. The Shell Grotto — discovered in 1835 and covered in 4.6 million shells — remains unexplained. Dreamland, the amusement park opened in 1920, has been revived.

Local tip

Turner Contemporary is free and excellent. The Shell Grotto is genuinely mysterious and wonderful. Dreamland for the revived heritage amusement park. Margate Old Town for outstanding independent food and galleries.
