About Mallaig

Known for

The Jacobite steam train (the Hogwarts Express termination, crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct), the ferry to Skye and the Small Isles, the kippers (Mallaig kippers are famous throughout Scotland), and a remote Highland fishing port of great character

A little history

Mallaig was built as a fishing port in 1901 when the railway arrived. The West Highland Line from Fort William — crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct — is one of the world's great railway journeys and became the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter. The ferry connections to Skye, Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna make Mallaig the gateway to the Small Isles.

Local tip

The Jacobite steam train arrival from Fort William is spectacular. The ferry to Skye is a beautiful crossing. Mallaig kippers are genuinely extraordinary — buy from the smokehouse. The harbour for langoustines.
