About Maldon

Known for

The Maldon Salt (one of England's most celebrated food products), the Blackwater Estuary, the Thames barges, the Battle of Maldon (991 AD, one of England's great poems), and a small Essex market town of extraordinary character

A little history

The Battle of Maldon (991 AD) — where the Anglo-Saxons were defeated by Viking raiders — inspired one of the finest Old English poems. Maldon Salt has been harvested from the Blackwater Estuary since Roman times using traditional methods unchanged for centuries. The Thames sailing barges moored at the quay are a magnificent sight.

Local tip

The Hythe Quay for the Thames barges — extraordinary wooden sailing vessels. The Maldon Crystal Salt company for the salt story. The High Street for independent shops and cafes. The Promenade Park.
