A little history

Maidenhead was the Victorian and Edwardian playground for London's wealthy — Boulter's Lock on summer Sundays was the most photographed scene in England. Cliveden, the great country house above the river (now a hotel), was at the centre of the Profumo Affair. Kenneth Grahame wrote The Wind in the Willows nearby.

Local tip

The Thames at Maidenhead is genuinely beautiful. Cliveden and its grounds (NT) are outstanding. Boulter's Lock for the historic atmosphere. The Norden Farm Arts Centre for excellent theatre.
