About Macclesfield

Known for

The Silk Museum (the Silk Capital of Britain), the Macclesfield Canal (the highest canal in England), Ian Curtis's grave, and a Cheshire mill town of significant industrial and musical heritage

A little history

Macclesfield was the silk-weaving capital of Britain — the Paradise Mill still has working Jacquard looms. Ian Curtis of Joy Division is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery — his grave has become a place of pilgrimage for music fans. The Macclesfield Canal, at 518 feet, is the highest canal in England.

Local tip

The Silk Museum and Paradise Mill are genuinely excellent. Ian Curtis's grave in the cemetery is a music pilgrimage site. The Macclesfield Canal for beautiful walking. The Treacle Market for independent food.
