About Lynton

Known for

The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway (the world's only water-powered cliff railway), the Valley of Rocks, the Exmoor National Park, and a small Devon clifftop village above the famous Lynmouth

A little history

Lynton sits high above Lynmouth — the two linked by the extraordinary cliff railway, opened in 1890, which uses no engine: water ballast from the top tank counterbalances the ascending car. The Valley of Rocks, a remarkable dry valley of jagged rock formations, inspired Shelley and Coleridge. Lynmouth's 1952 flood disaster killed 34 people.

Local tip

The cliff railway is genuinely extraordinary — the counterbalance system is elegant engineering. The Valley of Rocks walk from Lynton is spectacular. The South West Coast Path from Lynton is outstanding.
