About Lyme Regis

Known for

The Cobb (the ancient stone harbour and pier, immortalised in The French Lieutenant's Woman), the fossils (the Jurassic Coast is Europe's finest fossil site), the beach, and a small Dorset town of extraordinary literary and geological significance

A little history

Lyme Regis sits on the Jurassic Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — where Mary Anning found the first ichthyosaur skeleton in 1811. The Cobb, the ancient stone pier, appears in Jane Austen's Persuasion and John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman. The town has been a resort since the 17th century.

Local tip

Fossil hunting on the beach is genuinely productive — especially after storms. The Cobb walk at any time is extraordinary. The Lyme Regis Museum for Mary Anning and the fossil story. The town centre for excellent independent shops.
