About Lochgilphead

Known for

The Crinan Canal (the most beautiful shortcut in Britain), Kilmartin Glen (one of Scotland's greatest prehistoric landscapes), and the administrative centre of Argyll and Bute

A little history

Lochgilphead sits at the head of Loch Gilp on the Kintyre peninsula. The Crinan Canal — built 1793-1801 — provides a 9-mile shortcut between Ardrishaig and Crinan, saving the long journey around the Mull of Kintyre. Kilmartin Glen, just north of the town, has the highest concentration of prehistoric monuments in Scotland outside Orkney.

Local tip

Kilmartin Glen is extraordinary — standing stones, cairns and cup-marked rocks across a single valley. The Crinan Canal for walking or boating. The Kilmartin Museum for the prehistoric story. Crinan village at the canal end for exceptional seafood.
