About Llangollen

Known for

The International Eisteddfod (one of the world's greatest folk festivals), Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (UNESCO World Heritage Site, Telford's greatest engineering achievement), the Dee Valley, and a small Welsh town of extraordinary cultural and engineering significance

A little history

The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, held every July since 1947, attracts folk dancers, choirs and musicians from over 50 countries — one of the world's greatest multicultural festivals. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, built by Telford in 1805, carries the Llangollen Canal 38 metres above the River Dee in an iron trough — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Local tip

The International Eisteddfod in July is genuinely extraordinary — colourful, joyful and unlike anything else in Wales. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct for the boat or walking experience — crossing the trough above the Dee is exhilarating. Valle Crucis Abbey ruins.
