About Lichfield

Known for

Lichfield Cathedral (the only medieval English cathedral with three spires), the birthplace of Samuel Johnson, the Lichfield Gospels, and a beautiful Staffordshire city of great ecclesiastical and literary heritage

A little history

Lichfield Cathedral — with its three soaring spires known as 'the Ladies of the Vale' — is one of England's most beautiful. Samuel Johnson, author of the first English dictionary, was born in Market Square in 1709. The Lichfield Gospels, an 8th century illuminated manuscript, is one of Britain's greatest treasures.

Local tip

The Cathedral Close is extraordinary — the three spires from any angle are magnificent. The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. The market on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Lichfield Festival in July for arts.
