About Leyburn

Known for

The gateway to Wensleydale (the cheese valley), the Shawl (a remarkable ridgetop promenade walk), Bolton Castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned), and a small North Yorkshire market town of great Dales beauty

A little history

Leyburn is the main market town for lower Wensleydale. Bolton Castle, 5 miles away, was where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for six months in 1568. The Shawl — a natural terrace above the town — provides extraordinary views across the Dales.

Local tip

The Shawl walk above the town is free and extraordinary. Bolton Castle for Mary Queen of Scots. The Friday market for Wensleydale produce. Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes for the cheese.
