About Laurencekirk

Known for

The Howe of the Mearns (the most fertile farmland in north-east Scotland), Lewis Grassic Gibbon's Sunset Song country, and a small Aberdeenshire market town of literary and agricultural significance

A little history

Laurencekirk sits in the Howe of the Mearns — the broad fertile valley between the Grampians and the sea. Lewis Grassic Gibbon's trilogy A Scots Quair, beginning with Sunset Song (1932), is set in this landscape. The Mearns is some of Scotland's finest agricultural land.

Local tip

The Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre at Arbuthnott is excellent. The Mearns countryside cycling is beautiful. The town centre for local Aberdeenshire character.
