A little history

Launceston was Cornwall's county town until the 19th century. The Norman castle, with its extraordinary shell keep, was the administrative centre of Cornwall for centuries. George Fox, founder of the Quakers, was imprisoned in Launceston jail in 1656.

Local tip

The castle keep views are magnificent — one of Cornwall's finest views. The South Gate is free and extraordinary. The town has excellent independent shops. The steam railway to Bodmin.
