The Castle (which served as a working prison until 2011), the Maritime Museum, Williamson Park and a market city with a university that keeps it young

A little history

A Roman fort at the River Lune crossing. Lancaster Castle has served continuously as a castle, courthouse and prison for 1000 years — including trials of the Lancashire Witches in 1612. The city grew on the slave trade and declined with it.

Local tip

The city centre's independent quarter around Common Garden Street and China Street is excellent. Williamson Park for views across Morecambe Bay. The castle tour — genuinely fascinating.
