About Kirkcudbright

Known for

The Artists' Town (an extraordinary concentration of artists has lived here since the 19th century), the Broughton House (EA Hornel's beautiful artist's home and garden), Maclellan's Castle, and a Galloway town of genuine artistic heritage

A little history

Kirkcudbright — pronounced Kir-KOO-bree — has attracted artists since the late 19th century. EA Hornel, one of the Glasgow Boys, lived at Broughton House, now a National Trust for Scotland property. The town's whitewashed houses, harbour and castle created the 'Kirkcudbright School' of artists who painted here into the 20th century.

Local tip

Broughton House and garden (NTS) is genuinely excellent. Maclellan's Castle for the 16th century ruins. The Stewartry Museum for the artists' story. The harbour for the traditional Galloway atmosphere.
