About Kinross

Known for

Loch Leven Castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567-8), the Loch Leven National Nature Reserve (one of Scotland's most important wetlands), and a small Perthshire town of royal and natural significance

A little history

Loch Leven Castle, on an island in Loch Leven, was where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for nearly a year in 1567-8 before her dramatic escape. Loch Leven is one of Scotland's most important freshwater wetlands — a National Nature Reserve holding enormous numbers of wintering wildfowl and breeding ducks.

Local tip

The boat trip to Loch Leven Castle is excellent — Mary's imprisonment story is told well. Loch Leven for the extraordinary wildfowl — pink-footed geese in their thousands in autumn. The RSPB Vane Farm for birdwatching.
