A little history

Traquair House, continuously inhabited since 1107, is the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. The Bear Gates have been locked since 1745 when the Earl pledged not to open them until a Stuart king returned to the throne. The town grew as a woollen mill centre in the Tweed Valley.

Local tip

Traquair House is extraordinary — the Bear Gates, the private Catholic chapel, and the brewery are all remarkable. Glentress Forest for mountain biking. The Tweed for salmon fishing.
