About Huntly

Known for

Huntly Castle (one of Scotland's finest Renaissance palaces, now a magnificent ruin), the Deveron and Bogie rivers (excellent salmon fishing), the Gordon Highlanders connection, and a small Aberdeenshire market town of great castle heritage

A little history

Huntly Castle — the ancient seat of the Gordon family, Marquesses of Huntly — is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Scotland. The Gordon Highlanders, one of the most celebrated regiments in Scottish military history, were raised by the Gordons. The town's grid of streets reflects a planned 18th century layout.

Local tip

Huntly Castle is genuinely outstanding and often uncrowded — the Renaissance heraldry and the architectural ambition are extraordinary. The Deveron for salmon fishing. The Leith Hall (NTS) nearby for the historic house.
