About Huntingdon

Known for

Oliver Cromwell's birthplace (the Lord Protector who ruled England as a republic), Samuel Pepys's school, the Cromwell Museum, and a Cambridgeshire market town of profound constitutional history

A little history

Oliver Cromwell — the military commander who defeated Charles I, signed his death warrant, and ruled England as Lord Protector — was born in Huntingdon in 1599. Samuel Pepys, the great diarist, attended the Grammar School here. The town's market square has been the centre of Cambridgeshire life since medieval times.

Local tip

The Cromwell Museum in the old Grammar School building is excellent and free. The market square on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Great Ouse riverside walk. Hinchingbrooke House (where Cromwell's family lived) for the full heritage story.
