About Holyhead

Known for

The ferry to Ireland (the main Dublin route), South Stack lighthouse (one of Wales's most dramatic), Holyhead Mountain (the highest point on Anglesey), and the main port town of Anglesey

A little history

Holyhead has been the main embarkation point for Ireland since Roman times — the road from London to Holyhead (now the A5, built by Telford) was one of the great engineering projects of the early 19th century. South Stack lighthouse, perched on a rocky island connected by a bridge, is one of Wales's most dramatic landmarks.

Local tip

South Stack lighthouse is extraordinary — the seabird colonies (puffins, razorbills, guillemots) on the cliffs are outstanding in summer. Holyhead Mountain for the summit views over Anglesey and Ireland. The ferry terminal for the Irish crossing.
