A little history

Heywood grew as a cotton textile town in the 19th century. The East Lancashire Railway — one of England's finest heritage railways — passes through the town on its route between Bury and Rawtenstall, giving Heywood a remarkable connection to steam railway heritage.

Local tip

The East Lancashire Railway from Heywood is excellent — steam and diesel heritage trains through the Irwell Valley. The town centre for local shopping. Bury is nearby for the black pudding market and further food.
