About Hemel Hempstead

Known for

The Magic Roundabout (the notoriously complex road junction voted Britain's most terrifying), Gadebridge Park, the Marlowes shopping area, and a Hertfordshire new town with a medieval old town at its heart

A little history

Hemel Hempstead was designated a New Town in 1946 to absorb London overspill. But the old town at the top of the hill — with its Norman church, medieval streets and timber-framed buildings — predates the new town by 800 years. The Magic Roundabout junction has been terrifying drivers since 1973.

Local tip

The Old Town at the top of the hill is genuinely charming — the medieval streets and the Norman church are well worth finding. Gadebridge Park for the riverside. The Magic Roundabout for the driving experience (if you're brave).
