About Helmsley

Known for

Helmsley Castle (a magnificent ruined fortress), Duncombe Park (a Baroque mansion in extraordinary grounds), the Ryedale Food Lovers Festival, and a small North Yorkshire market town at the gateway to the North York Moors

A little history

Helmsley Castle, built in the 12th century, was besieged during the Civil War — the earthworks from the siege are still visible. Duncombe Park, the magnificent Baroque house set in landscaped gardens, overlooks the town. Helmsley is the official starting point of the Cleveland Way long-distance path.

Local tip

Helmsley Castle is excellent and English Heritage — the siege earthworks are fascinating. Duncombe Park for the Baroque gardens and deer park. The market square for excellent independent food shops. The Cleveland Way for the North Moors walking.
