About Hawkshead

Known for

Beatrix Potter's Hill Top farm (the most visited National Trust property in the North), Esthwaite Water, Tarn Hows, Wordsworth's school, and one of England's most perfectly preserved medieval villages

A little history

Hawkshead's ancient buildings, courtyards and alleyways have changed remarkably little since William Wordsworth attended school here in the late 18th century. Beatrix Potter lived at Hill Top farm in Near Sawrey and bequeathed her farmland to the National Trust — creating much of the Lake District National Park.

Local tip

Hill Top farm is tiny and timed entry is essential — book in advance. Walk to Tarn Hows from Hawkshead — one of the Lake District's most beautiful walks. The village itself is extraordinary.
