About Hastings

Known for

The Battle of Hastings 1066 (the most important battle in English history), Hastings Castle, the Old Town fishing stalls (Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet), the arts scene, and a Sussex coast town of profound historical significance

A little history

The Battle of Hastings in 1066 — though actually fought at Battle, 6 miles inland — changed England forever. Hastings Castle, built by William the Conqueror, overlooks the town. The Old Town's net shops (tall black wooden huts for storing fishing nets) are unique. Hastings has become a significant arts destination.

Local tip

The Old Town for fresh fish directly from the beach fishermen — extraordinarily fresh. The net shops are extraordinary and unique. The Jerwood Gallery for excellent contemporary art. The West Hill for cliff railway and castle views.
